Welcome to Tsumsted Wonderland! Part 2 - Episode 3

The name origin story is really something that can’t be translated one for one without somehow creating a new English word to make it work, so I’m just gonna pretend none of that happened and just leave notes on what’s going on for reference.

Azul
That reminds me… Kalim. Regarding those creatures, what do you believe is a suitable approach to handling them?
Kalim
You mean this li'l fella?
It looked like it had fun dancing to my phone's text notif ringtone just now, you know. I think it's got good vibes and is a fun one to be with!
Azul
No, that's not what I meant… Personally, I feel that we should protect them.
After all, there doesn't seem to be any harm in doing just that, so treating them with the spirit of benevolence should be appropriate. I do wonder what the headmaster would say, however…
Lilia
I believe there should be no issue in that regard, because Sebek also took care of the one resembling himself in accordance with the headmaster's instructions.
Azul
Is that so? That is reassuring to hear, Lilia.
Kalim
Man, you really are such a nice guy, Azul. You even thought seriously about what to do with these guys!
Azul
Oh no, not at all, I am far from the magnanimous figure you believe me to be. It just isn't in my nature to leave anyone or anything just floundering by themselves.
Kalim, Lilia, if either of you ever encounter any difficulties in the handling of those creatures, please feel free reach out to me anytime.
Because I will gladly take up the mantle of caregiver for all of our creatures free of charge!!
Lilia
Hoh? No compensation required at all? Such impressive statements are rare coming from you.
Did you come up with a fun idea by any chance?
Azul
A fun idea, you say? Why, I have no clue what you mean by that.
Kalim
Thanks, Azul! I'll make sure to reach out if any trouble does happen!

Azul
Apologies for disturbing you this late in the night, Headmaster Crowley. Is now a good time?
Kalim
So like, a bunch of odd creatures actually fell out of the sky just now. It's these guys…
Crowley
Yes yes, this is about the Tsums, correct?

Sigh… Really now. Just how many of them have arrived this time? It's not as if I have time for this either, and yet…

Ortho
Good evening. Mr. Kalim Al-Asim's group is also here, it seems.
Rook
We were just about to spend the night discussing about the mysterious set of circumstances surrounding our dear guests and the beautiful phenomenon which occurred this evening.
Jade
Oh my…Azul. I see you have found the creature that resembles yourself as well.
Azul
Indeed. Going out to search for a possible Tsum on my own after encountering the one resembling you turned out to be the right call.
Deuce
So I wasn't the only one who found a Tsum after all… I didn't think there'd be so many of us who did, though.
Kalim
Hey, is the "Tsum" thing that everyone's been mentioning supposed to refer to these fellas by any chance?
Crowley
That is correct. It refers to the mysterious creatures that appeared out of nowhere in tandem with a dazzling ray of light. For some reason, they assume forms that resemble our students as well…
As to where they came from and how they managed to slip through the college's barrier… They both remain unknown.
…How is it possible for the barrier to be broken through AGAIN considering I'd reexamined it after the Tsums returned the last time, though?! I can't stand this!
Jade
That must have been quite a disaster. I empathise with your pains.
Deuce
Mysterious creatures… If that's the case, then how do we know that these creatures are called "Tsums"?
Crowley
Ahh, that's…
Azul
…Oh? Please, have a look. The Tsums have all gathered in one place at some point while we weren't paying attention.
Jade
It appears it does not end with that. The Tsums are climbing onto the backs of other Tsums, which then proceed to climb onto other Tsums…
Kalim
They climb so skilfully~ Take care not to fall over, okay!

Tsum stacks)

Lilia
Ooh, this is quite the fine pile1 they have made… Hm?
Rook
They appear to bear quite the striking resemblance to how stones are stacked2 in monument signs. …Oooh!
Ortho
Perhaps the creatures have a tendency to stack3 themselves upon other individuals… Ah!
Azul
When they gather in one location, they pile4 themselves up on each other… For as many individuals as there are, one after another…
Kalim
I see, so that's why they're…
Kalim, Azul, Rook, Ortho, Lilia, Jade & Deuce

TSUM TSUMS!!!!!

Crowley
…That's right. Which is why for convenience's sake, we called these creatures "Tsums" in turn.
Kalim
So that's why. I think its a good name that's also easy to understand.
Azul
Now that we have solved the mystery of its name, I believe it's about time we moved on to the main question at hand.
Deuce
The main question?
Jade
Correct. The question right now is who exactly should be in charge of taking care of these Tsums.
Azul
We too have heard from Floyd regarding the circumstances surrounding the previous encounter. It is likely that the Tsums to remain with us until tomorrow night, correct?
Which is to say, someone is required to look after the Tsums until then.
Crowley
It is exactly as you said. Just like the last time, all of you students will be in charge of looking after them.
Each of you, please take the respective Tsum that resembles you and take care of it.
Kalim
Ohh, sure! Sounds kinda fun anyways.
Azul
Having to add Tsum care on to my work at the Mostro Lounge… It will be difficult, but I understand.
I shall accept this responsibility for the sake of our ever-caring headmaster with open arms!
Kalim
Good for you, Azul! You did want to look after the Tsums after all.
Rook
The ability to coexist with an unknown creature is nothing short of fantastic. I, too, welcome this proposition warmly. There is simply no reason for me to turn it down!
Lilia
I do have expertise in creature care myself, so you may depend on me for this task. Kehehe, it seems that I'll be able to have fun afterwards.
Ortho
I'm excited as well. I was just thinking about how I'd love to conduct extensive research on what the Tsum species is like!
Deuce
So I'll have the Tsum to care for on top of my homework and class prep? I'm not very confident, but I'd never be able to become an honours student if I quit at this stage.
Jade
I have little to no experience with the care of living beings that are not plants so I am nervous as well… However, I shall endeavour to fulfill this responsibility to the best of my ability.
Crowley
Ohh… How unbelievable this chorus of eager agreement is! It touches me oh, so deeply. Oh, to be blessed with such sincere and good students!
Well then. I will be counting on all of you to take good care of the Tsums for the sake of the school's order!

Notes

Very long ramble about Tsum pun below. I’m not interested in making this believable in the English language, that’s for the EN localisation team to figure out lmao

  1. Tsum Tsum is literally “Tsumu Tsumu” (ツムツム) in Japanese, with ツム being the Japanese verb for piling/stacking - 積む . From Lilia to Azul, the boys will keep making remarks about the Tsums’ stacking behaviour, and realising for themselves why they are called Tsums.
In Lilia’s case, he says 見事に積み上がったのう (migoto ni tsumiagatta nou, lit. a fine piling they have done). (Return to text)

  1. Rook says 石積みの道しるべのよう (ishidzumi no michishirube no you, lit. like a signpost made via masonry). I tried to do some searches and the stone signposts that appear in images don’t exactly have this stacky quality to it (they are just. carved out of a single block of stone or something.), but what I did find is that monument signs that are made using stone (think, signs for hotels or buildings in suburbs or something) do tend to have stones stacked together in the craft, so I went with that instead of the literal signpost. Another possibility is that I just don’t understand Rook speak, afaik this is my first time doing a proper translation of his dialogue anyways. (Return to text)

  1. Ortho says 他の個体の上に"積む"習性 (hoka no kotai no ue ni tsumu shuusei, lit. habit of piling up on other individuals) (Return to text)

  1. Like Ortho, Azul says “tsumu” directly 自分たちを"積む" (jibuntachi wo tsumu, lit. stack themselves) (Return to text)
