Scalding Sands - Asim Park

…Ah! There are camels on the lawn all the way at the back of the park!

That’s surprising. There are even elephants and giraffes too, right?
Jamil
In the past, camels were used as a form of transportation because they can travel long distances even under the sweltering heat.
Now, quite a lot of places allow tourists to ride one around the tourist attractions. The elephants and giraffes are here for the same reason.
Cater
It really feels like a zoo or theme park even though it’s supposed to be a park that’s free for all to enjoy.
Are all the other parks in the Scalding Sands like this too?
Jamil
No, actually. It’s only Asim Park here that’s unique. The rest are normal parks.
Trey, Grim and Cater
…Hm?
Trey
Did… you just say Asim Park…?
Cater
Don’t tell me, this place…?
Jamil
Correct, the whole area here counts under the Asim family’s private estate.
Trey, Grim and Cater
WHAAAAATTTT!?
Trey
You mean, this park is owned by Kalim’s family!?
Cater
So this is a private park… It’s unbelievably vast!
Trey
I guess it’s a given that we’d reach Kalim’s house by walking through here…
Cater
Or rather, isn’t this place basically part of Kalim’s house?
Malleus
Quite the bright and spacious garden this is.
Jamil
I came here often during my breaks since it’s close to the Asim residence.
Cater
To take a breather, huh. What did you do to pass the time?
Jamil
Usually… I’d relax under the shade of the trees.
Kalim
Ehh? Didn’t you often have dance practices instead?
Jamil
…Hang on.
I did spend a bit of my breaktimes dancing here, but…
Why do you know that, Kalim!?

Because the security cameras showed me?
Jamil
…And those cameras are supposed to be viewed only by the park’s security personnel, right?

I’d often wanna play with you when you’re on your breaks.
So when that happened, the first place I’d go to search for you was the park.
But since it’s so spacious, finding you is hard, right? So I’d go and ask the park’s caretaker about you.
And when I did, he’d use the security cameras to help me look for you! We’d find you instantly!
Jamil
…Don’t mix personal affairs into business!!
Kalim
You’d listen to music with your earphones and dance with all your heart alone, right Jamil?
Whenever I saw that on the monitors, I’d also feel like dancing myself~
That’s why I’d rush over to where you were and dance with you!
Jamil
No wonder you found me so quickly… To think that you and the caretaker were in cahoots…
Trey
Jamil can’t even catch a break during his designated breaks…
Cater
Sure is hard being an attendant~
Malleus
The security system seems to be firm. Impressive.
Cater
Malleus… That’s not something to be impressed about.
Kalim
We sure played a lot here ever since we were kids!!
Thinking back, they were all joyful memories for me!
Jamil
And they were all horrible memories for me instead…
Kalim
We played games like kick the can until night fell, and I won every round too.
Jamil
That’s because I’d be dead tired after searching high and low for the can in such a huge park.
Cater
He must’ve been losing on purpose~
Trey
True… That sounds plausible.
Cater
He’s such a worrywart~
Trey
As if you’re one to talk.
Cater
Huuuh? I wonder what you mean by that?
Jamil
There was also that time when you said that the animals looked like they wanted to have a walk, and released the giraffes and elephants from their pens.
Kalim
Yeah, that did happen! The animals were so excited since it was the first time they’d had such a chance, right?!
Everyone was so lively!
Jamil
It would’ve been a catastrophe if the animals managed to run off into the city back then!
Just how much effort did you think it took to get the escapees back into their pens…
All the workers ended up having to be assembled to herd the animals back…
Cater
You’ve faced tons of hardships since back then, huh, Jamil.
Trey
It’s often said that the culprit himself is always the last to know.1
Malleus
It is the city’s own defences that are insecure if just having animals flee into it is sufficient to be classified as a catastrophe.
Cater
Malleus… That’s not something to be concerned about.
Grim
There aren’t any pens around, though?
Jamil
…Thanks to that incident, the environment in which the animals were raised was reviewed and the pens were torn down.
Kalim
Ohh! So everyone can spend time happily together now. Isn’t that great~!
Cater
Jamil…you did your best.
Kalim
Ah! We were having so much fun on our walk that we’ve arrived at my house already!

- This is actually the funniest line I’ve had to read in a while. So what Trey says here is “知らぬは本人ばかり” (lit. only the person themself doesn’t know). There’s a saying that’s the equivalent to “the husband is always last to know” and it’s written in Japanese as “知らぬは亭主ばかりなり”, and the similarities between Trey’s ver. and this are too close for me to overlook :) (Return to text)
