Scalding Sands - Zahab Market

Trey
Thank goodness, I managed to buy some tomato juice somehow.
With that, I believe we’ve all finished buying our souvenirs for Lilia.

Kalim
Lilia would probably be overjoyed too when he receives all our souvenirs!
Grim
My share’s included in the souvenir you bought, Yuu!
Malleus
I can already picture Lilia’s happiness.
Do make sure to drop by Diasomnia after we return to school. I’d like to have Lilia hear about our travel anecdotes.
Grim
Sure! You can count on me!
Jamil
Now then, where shall we head to next…
Cater
Sniff sniff… Hey, do y’all smell coffee here?
Jamil
The citizens of this country enjoy coffee and tea, so you can find cafes throughout the streets.
The specialty spiced coffee of the Scalding Sands has a unique flavour and is very popular.
In addition, there are also cafes that offer coffee reading1 services.
Grim
Whazzat?
Jamil
It is a rare type of fortune telling that originated from the Scalding Sands. Even Najma is hooked on it lately.
Spiced coffee is first made by brewing coffee beans together with spices without the use of a filter.
The coffee grounds will then remain in the cup after drinking, and one’s future is read by examining the shape and patterns formed by the leftover grounds and coffee.
Grim
I don’t really get it, but is it fun?
Jamil
I don’t know if it’s fun persay, but… Wanna try it out, Grim?
Najma asked me to read her fortune before, so I had to study it. I can do a bit of coffee reading, even if it’s not much.
Cater
Really~! Have a go at it! I’m interested in fortune-telling myself.
Trey
You’re good at astrology after all. Apparently, Cater’s quite accurate too, so I’ve also had my fortune read by him.
Malleus
I’d like to observe this as well since I have never heard of such a fortune telling method.
Grim
I’ll get my fortune read then.
Jamil
Got it. Then, let’s go to the cafe over there with outdoor seating.

Jamil
Now, Grim. Drink the coffee. Be careful not to drink the coffee grounds near the surface.
Grim
Gotcha!

*Glug, glug*

Grim
…There’s a weird taste that stings my tongue. Are you sure this is coffee?
Jamil
That’s because the coffee was lightly roasted. The taste of the cardamom spice in it is strong.
It’s why we often drink it while eating sweets.
It’ll be easier to swallow if you put this sugar candy in your mouth while drinking it.
Grim
Om nom nom nom… Oh! With this, it’ll be okay then! It’s tasty!
Gulp, gulp…
Jamil
Once you’ve finished drinking, place the saucer on the cup and turn it upside-down onto the saucer.
Finally, while pressing onto the bottom of the cup, state what fortune you want to be told.
Grim
Allllright, what I wanna know is…when I’ll become a great mage!
Trey
Looks like it’s not a question of whether it can be achieved for him.
Cater
I mean, it’s fine, right? It’s a very Gri-gri thing to do.
Jamil
Alright… Grim’s fortune is…
Grim
Gulp…
Jamil
…It’s pointless. I can’t read it.
Grim

FNAGH!! What’s with that!!

Jamil
That’s because you drank up all the coffee grounds even though I said not to!
It’s truly impressive that you managed to gulp down all those bitter grounds…
Grim
I can’t sip it bit by bit while keeping the coffee grounds in mind, yanno! It’s a pain!
Cater
It’s alright, y’know. That just means that Gri-gri’s future transcends the capabilities of fortune telling ♪

Notes

  1. This seems to be based off/largely inspired by Turkish coffee fortunes! I also added a bit more detail into Jamil’s explanation based on how coffee reading is done. (Return to text)
