Straight From ‘t Oven, Fresh From the ‘Eart!

Harveston Apple Square (Day)

Harveston - Apple Square

Jade
It appears we have arrived at quite the spacious area. Is this perhaps the village square?
Grim
There's loads of tourists around!
Epel
This is Apple Square, the main event venue for the festival.
Sebek
There's also lots of roofed stalls. There's quite the bustle here.
Epel
It is the one Kelkkarotu of the year, after all!
Most of the stalls are managed by the villagers.
Everyone's in high spirits since lots of people visit now. It's the best time to make bank!
Jade
Their business spirit is truly magnificent.
Epel
This bazaar is known as Kokko1 Market.
Idia
Kokko? What's that supposed to be?
Epel
It means "bonfire" in the Shaftlands' ancient language.
Jade
Now that you mention it, there is indeed a large bonfire set up in the middle of the square.
Grim
There's so many apples hung up around it! Slurp…
Epel
Grim, those are just lamps for decoration. You couldn't eat them even if you wanted to.
Grim
Fnagh! You're right… Hurry up and get me some apples to munch on!
Sebek
Didn't you just eat some at Epel's place?
Grim
I can eat them non-stop no problem since they're so good!
Epel
You like them that much? I'm really glad to hear that.
Sebek
I'm feeling thirsty now, though.
Epel
Would you like to have some apple juice, then? There's some being given out over there.
Sebek
Oh? And free of charge at that? That's quite generous.
Epel
Yeah. Apart from juice, there's also apple tea and apple ginger tea being distributed, if you'd like.
Our village doesn't usually have many people visiting, so everyone's always really overjoyed when tourists drop by to visit.

Epel
Shall I get you some apple juice, then? I'll make sure to add ice as well.
Epel
How about apple ginger tea, then? It's sure to keep you warm and toasty.
Epel
What about the rest of you? What would you like to drink? I'll make a note real quick…
Jade
I would like to have some apple juice, please. I wish to try some since it is reputed to be delectable.
Sebek
I'll have apple tea. I'm feeling chilly already, so having it hot would be great.
Idia
…I'd also like to have something warm. Requesting apple ginger tea.
Grim
I wanna try all sorts of drinks, so just bring all of them to me!
Epel
W-Wait a second! I can't remember everything if you give all your orders at the same time!

Epel
I'm back with your drinks, guys.
First up, 100% pure apple juice made with only the finest apples! Out of all of Harveston's local specialties, this is especially popular!
Jade
Thank you very much. Then if you'll excuse me…
Gulp gulp…This is incredible.
It's so flavourful that it feels as if I had just devoured a freshly picked apple whole.
Its rich sweetness spreads throughout all four corners of the mouth, and its refreshing tartness is simply exceptional.
Epel
And here's your hot apple tea, Sebek.
Sebek
It's fragrant. There's also lots of fairly large apple cubes floating around in the tea.
Gulp…! Delicious!
This sweetness…honey must have been added to it.
Epel
And this is apple ginger tea to keep you warm.
Idia
thx!
Idia
Gulp! …Phew…it's really warming me up.
All thanks to the ginger's heat retention effect, I believe. Perfect for sipping in cold weather.
Grim
I can drink up any and all the cups you hand to me! Gulp gulp…
I'm starting to get hungry after drinking all that… I wanna munch on something!
Sniff sniff… I smell a sweet fragrance!
Jade
It seems that an apple pie is being baked up ahead, perhaps.
Sebek
A pie, you say? That does sound delicious…hm?
Jade, Sebek, Grim & Idia

I-It's huge!

Epel
They're making a giant apple pie that's five metres in diameter. It's one of the highlights of the festival.2
Looks like it's just been baked! Servings are given out for free, so let's go get some.
Sebek
Even the pie is free? Harveston really is generous.

Apple Pie Baker
Aye, here ye go! Apple pie straight from 't oven, fresh from the 'eart!
Epel
Thank you!
Jade, Epel, Idia, Grim & Sebek
Thanks for the food!

*Munch munch…*

Sebek
The crumbly pie crust and the crunch of the apple filling are a perfect match for each other.
Grim
Munch crunch, munch munch crunch! Yum!
Epel
Grim, don't eat so fast! Otherwise…
Grim
Umya!! It burns!!
Epel
Ahh…too late.
I was going to say that the apples inside are all soft and piping hot since they're freshly baked…
Grim
I-I got a cat's tongue…
But it's so good… Huff… Huff puff…
Idia
He's sticking his teeth out to eat it! The feral levels are peaking.
Jade
This is such a wonderful festival to be giving out both juice and apple pie for free.
Are there any other attractions by any chance?
Epel
Oh, right. There's an apple contest too.
Grim
To decide which is the most delicious apple?! I wanna be the judge!
Epel
That's not it. The apples are judged based on their colour…how red they are, to be precise.
Jade
What an unusual fair. May I know what inspired its conception?
Epel
The Fairest Queen was said to greatly treasure red apples according to her legend.
So we would select the reddest of the apples picked in winter to give as offerings to her.
That eventually transformed into the fair we have today, in which we judge which apple is the reddest.
Now, it's an event that serves to liven up the festival.
The fair will actually be held tomorrow, but would any of you like to go watch?
Grim
As if anyone would wanna! If it doesn't let me eat then I'm not interested.

Notes

  1. Kokko means bonfire in Finnish. (Return to text)

  1. In general, there is a mix of rural Aomori (possibly in the Tsugaru region according to this Japanese tweet) influences, in particular with the apple farming, dialect, and possible geography, along with Nordic (mostly Swedish and Finnish) influences that I’ve been able to identify. There are possibly other influences that I have failed to identify, but if I do spot something, I will make sure to leave a note. The tweet also mentions a place that makes gigantic 3m-diameter apple pie (last image), and the website for the Giant Apple Pie Challenge to the World Club is here, together with the recipe for their 2m-diameter apple pie. I also found this brochure/guide map for Hirosaki’s apple pies. (Return to text)
