You Are All Wrong

Harveston Assembly Room (Night)

Harveston - Assembly Room

*Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!*

Marja
Alright now, no matter how much fun it is, it's about time we ended this party.
Grim
Fnagh?! But I still wanna play!
Epel
Didn't you hear the cuckoo clock just now? It's already 11 at night, so it's time to sleep.
Marja
You lot must have been tired out from today, so please rest well tonight now.
Grim
Well, I'm not sleepy at all! I'm gonna keep playing!!
Marja

GO TA SLEEP!!!

What are you all going to do if any of you mess up during the race due to lack of sleep then?!
Grim
Fnagh?!
Marja
Even if tha're not flaggin' or still want t' play! Tha're going t' sleep!1
Even the apples themselves spend all the time they need in winter to store nutrients so that they can bear delicious fruits! Have I made myself clear?!
Grim
I-I don't really get it but…got it…
Jade
She truly does a complete 180 whenever it comes to the sled race.
Epel
Ahaha…
Grandma, thanks for hosting the party tonight!
It was real fun!

Epel
Looks like grandma and the rest have all gone home already. Shall we get ready for bed then?
Sebek
Yeah, let's.
Jade
Gentlemen, I'd like your attention please. Although Madame Marja had indeed ordered us to go to bed, there is still one more thing left for us to do.
Idia, Epel & Sebek
What?
Epel
Something for us schoolmates to do before we sleep together, which means…we're having a pillow fight, right?!
Sebek
No, surely he means we'll be working out before bed!
Idia
You know the Love Sled heroines held a pajama party in the anime right?
Jade
You are all wrong. The correct answer is "strategy meeting".
We should flesh out our strategies and protocols for tomorrow's race.
After all, we cannot afford to lose to Royal Sword Academy, can we.
Sebek
I see now.
Epel
That's true, then let's do so.
Jade
During the party, I borrowed a copy of the race's rulebook from one of the villagers.
Let us first review the rules as we flip through its pages.
Epel
Wh-When did you… You're truly ever-prepared, Jade!
Jade
Rule Number 1: Should any member of a team be absent, the whole team will be disqualified.
Rule Number 2. Winners are determined based on the cumulative time taken for all four members of the team to complete the race.
And rule number 3. The time taken for an individual member to complete the race is defined as the moment when the tip of the plushie's nose reaches the finish line.
Sebek
So the record is based on the time taken for the plushie to reach the goal and not the sled or musher, huh? That was unexpected.
Idia
S-Sir Sebek… Friendly reminder that this is the Plush Sledding Race…
S-So the key players would be the plushies… We mushers act as their power supplies that enable them to move.
Epel
After all, honouring the animals is the heart of what the Kelkkarotu is in the first place.
Jade
Which means we must target the plushies themselves rather than the sleds.
Epel
…Jade, I have a feeling that your logic is leaping a bit too far there.
Jade
Rule number 4: each participant will be responsible for any collisions or crashes caused between sleds.
Sebek
Mmm, better be careful then!
Idia
In other words… if the only one to crash is the opponent, we won't be disqualified?
Jade
Correct. So long as we make the opponent crash without damaging our own sled, there should be no issue.
Idia
Fuhee! Roger that!
Epel
Wha-?!
Jade
Rule Number 5. As mushers race along the course, they are not allowed to do so in a manner that would hinder the movements of other sleds.
Sebek
Yeah, that's an obvious one!
Jade
In other words, creating pitfalls in the racecourse beforehand is perfectly okay according to the rules.
Idia
Doing it beforehand means that it'd fall out of the scope of the rule since it wouldn't be constructed while everyone is racing anyway, so it's safe to do for sure.
Jade
Indeed, you have a point! Now, on to the next rule…
Epel
S-Stop right there! Why don't we win without doing such tampering instead?!
Idia
hah? but it's perfectly fine according to the rules. these aren't cheats or glitches~
taking advantage of loopholes in the rules is literally basic game strats 101. boom, checkmate!
Jade
Quite true. After all, we are supposed to prioritise victory above all else.
Epel
No, this is a fight that Royal Sword Academy picked with us…
Jade
I don't recall them doing so, however?
Epel
I want us to teach them a lesson by winning with our true power! Otherwise, it just wouldn't sit well with me!
Sebek
Yeah, same, Epel!
It is by fighting head on and winning with one's true strength that one is able to truly experience the joy of winning.
Even if we did win, it'd still be a hollow victory if we didn't play it fair. Is there even any meaning to such a disappointing victory?
Jade
The first years are quite the naiv-…wholehearted bunch, it seems.
Idia
God no… This is why muscles for brains are so…
W-Well then… Could everyone please pay attention to yours truly's tablet for a bit.
Epel
…I-Isn't this a video of the Plush Sledding race course?!
Idia
I-I used a drone to record an aerial view of the course during our afternoon practice…☆
Epel
A drone?! You seriously brought such a thing along with you here?!
Idia
Yup… It's for videorecording the locations used in Love Sled since it can take wide shots~
And to think that it ended up being useful in this way.
Sebek
I did think that his luggage was excessive, but I guess…
Epel
W-Wow…
Idia
I mean, it's not like the racecourse is hidden or anything, right? Preparing for tomorrow with this doesn't count under foul play in this case then.
Epel
That's true… This should still count as following the rules.
Jade
Pitfalls, too, fall within the scope of the rules.
Epel
Please don't treat the village's beloved Kelkkarotu as if it were an NRC event!
Sebek
This is quite the convenient video recording. You can identify which passages will become deadlocks in a single glance.
Jade
Indeed. This will allow us to think holistically about the progression of the race.
Sebek
Mm… We went through this area during practice earlier. There's three consecutive curves here and I ended up falling over while trying to get through.
Epel
For this part, you have to charge at full speed until you get to the start of the corner, and then make a sudden brake right before the curve.
That way, you can make use of the centrifugal force to quickly get the sled to face the exit of the corner.
Your deceleration will be minimal and it's effective for sharp turns, so even the triple curves can be cleared just by counting on your speed!
Idia
Ohh! That's what you call drifting in racing games, right!
Epel
Drifting is an actual driving technique, though. It's not just racing game jargon…
Jade
But it does seem like a gaming term in Idia's eyes.
Epel, wouldn't the musher end up slipping out of their sled if they were to speed into a corner as you described?
Epel
It's true that mushers would be prone to understeers that way since the ground's surface is also frozen over.
That's why you will need to counter steer so that you can correct your sled's movement.
Grim
…I don't get what you're sayin' at all.
Jade
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they are jargon used in motor racing. Epel does appear to be quite familiar in that aspect.
Sebek
Now that you mention it, we did talk quite a bit about cars and magical wheels back at Harvest Highway.
Epel
Yeah, I'm a fan of magical wheels plus I watch races often, so I became familiar with driving techniques over time.
And then, I'd test out the techniques I learnt from the races while I'm sledding.
I think they could be applied in tomorrow's Kelkkarotu, so I'll make sure to teach everyone all sorts of tricks later!

Notes

  1. Her original line isn’t in dialect here, but I thought if she’s running her mouth she would slip back into dialect anyways. Flaggin’ = tired (Return to text)
